Thinking about hiring a private chef for your Big Island vacation or event? Here are the questions I get asked most often — answered honestly and practically, so you can plan with confidence.
How much does a private chef cost on the Big Island?
Private chef pricing on Hawaii's Big Island varies based on the number of guests, menu complexity, and type of service. A typical private dinner for 4–8 guests runs from $150 to $250+ per person, including menu planning, shopping, preparation, plating, and kitchen cleanup. Events and multi-course experiences are priced based on scope. I'm happy to provide a custom quote once we discuss your vision — just reach out via the contact form.
What areas of the Big Island do you serve?
I serve the entire Big Island, with a particular focus on the Kohala Coast, Kona, Kukio, Hualalai, and the Mauna Kea resort corridor. Whether you're staying at a private vacation rental, a luxury estate, or a resort villa, I can bring the full private chef experience directly to your kitchen or outdoor entertaining space.
What's included in a private chef dinner?
A private chef experience with me includes everything: a custom menu consultation, sourcing the freshest local ingredients (Big Island fish, Waimea produce, local farms), prep and cooking at your location, full table setup and plating, and complete kitchen cleanup afterward. You arrive to a beautiful meal and leave with a clean kitchen. Optional add-ons include wine pairing recommendations and event photography through my wife Samantha Lehua.
How far in advance do I need to book?
For vacation rental dinners and smaller events, I recommend booking at least 5–7 days in advance to allow time for menu planning and sourcing. For weddings, large events, or holiday dates, earlier is always better — 2 to 4 weeks or more is ideal. That said, I do accommodate last-minute requests when my schedule allows, so don't hesitate to reach out even on short notice.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies?
Absolutely. I regularly cook for guests with gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, keto, and other dietary needs. Please share all dietary restrictions and allergies during the booking process so I can design a menu that everyone at the table can enjoy safely and deliciously.
What kind of events do you cater?
I cater a wide range of events across the Big Island, including intimate private dinners, anniversary and birthday celebrations, wedding rehearsal dinners and receptions, corporate retreats, holiday parties, and multi-day vacation chef packages. Whether it's a quiet dinner for two on a private lanai or a 50-person poolside celebration at a Kohala Coast estate, I bring the same attention to detail and quality.
Do you cook at vacation rentals?
Yes — this is actually one of the most popular ways guests book with me. If you're renting a home or villa on the Big Island, having a private chef come to you is one of the best upgrades you can make to your stay. I work in your vacation rental kitchen, handle all the shopping and prep, and clean up after service. Many guests book multiple nights throughout their trip.
What makes your menus unique to Hawaii?
I source as locally as possible — Kona-caught ahi and mahi mahi, Big Island Wagyu beef, Waimea heirloom produce, locally grown mushrooms, Ka'u citrus, and macadamia nut oil from Hamakua. The Big Island has an extraordinary local food system, and every menu I design reflects what's freshest and most exceptional right now. You're not getting a generic menu; you're getting a meal that could only happen here.
